The EPA’s New Toy

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

If you’ve spent any time on the EPA’s website, you have likely seen their new ‘toy’. Seeing as I am not a frequent visitor over there, I was shocked and amused by what they had developed.

By teaming up with Google Maps, the EPA has put together an interactive map of all 2009 enforcement actions. Users are able to select a specific location and zoom in to see what EPA actions have occurred in the area. Visitors are also able to sort the enforcement actions by category: air, water, land, criminal, cross-media, and federal facilities. A summary of each case is available by clicking on the tabbed markers along with specific information regarding penalties and actions taken.

After playing with the map, I am pleased (?) to report that in my hometown of Pittsburgh the EPA took action in all categories except criminal. Check it out and see how your town fared this year.
