Sustainable Communities

Friday, February 5th, 2010

I recently learned a history lesson that I wanted to share with you all. It is not in entomology, which is the study of insects, but rather etymology, which is the study of word origin.

The word is: community.

Could you repeat the word?

Community.

May I have a definition?

A unified body of individuals; the people with common interests living in a particular area.

[This is beginning to sound like a spelling bee, no?]

A Community Garden

Anyways, its roots stem from the Latin word communis which means “public, general, shared by all or many.”  A plethora of other words in the English language share similar roots, but I’d like to focus for a minute on the words common, community, and communication.

As educator John Dewey once noticed, the relationship between these three words is unmistakable. They work off of one another and have shaped societies and social relationships in innumerable ways, including that of the Powered Green community.

If you’ve spent any time at Powered Green’s site, you may have stumbled upon our wonderful group of followers.  These individuals from across the nation have come together to outwardly show their support for wind energy. Our followers share a passion for sustainability, eco-friendly living, renewable energy, efficiency, and all have hope for a brighter, cleaner future (If this sounds like you, join us via the above link). It is these common interests which have brought them together to form a vibrant community of their own.

As such, every great community thrives on great communication, which is why Inked Green came into existence. We are working hard to keep you in the know about a variety of sustainability subjects and have been thrilled with your thoughts and feedback. Once again, we would like to extend the offer that if there’s a topic you’re itching to learn more about, let us know via e-mail (inkedgreen[at]gmail[dot]com) or a post comment and we’ll do some digging. Communication is how communities spread ideas and awareness, so go on, communicate with us!

There’s one final thread with the community focus that we wanted to inform you of, and that is our new Community Partners tab on sidebar. These are groups who share similar passions and who also have a lot to offer to their communities–both real and virtual. Be sure to check them out because as Zac Efron said in High School Musicial, “We’re all in this together.”
