Madison’s NEW Roofline

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

A few months ago, InkedGreen published Green Roofs to the People! The post discussed the underlying concept of green roofs and highlighted some phenomenal (local) efforts to grow green roofs in Madison.

Those efforts, driven by Danna Olsen, are still underway and will be culminating this THURSDAY at the Madison Public Library-Sequoya Branch at 6 PM (For directions to the event, click here). If green property management sparks your fancy, be sure to check out the invitation below. Hope to see you there!

A TEDTalk worth talking about..

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

A few weeks ago, Majora Carter spoke at the Tales From Planet Earth film festival.  Carter is an environmental activist, justice advocate, and economic consultant from the South Bronx area of New York.  She is the founder of Sustainable South Bronx, a non-profit environmental justice organization seeking to “Green the Ghetto” and is president of the Majora Carter Group, a green economic consulting firm.

Majora is a fascinating woman who knows her stuff and is an inspiration to people everywhere, myself included.   She was named a 2006 MacArthur Genius Fellow, a Rachel Carson Award winner, and was one of Utne Reader Magazine’s “50 Visionaries Who Are Changing the World,” to list but a few of her widespread achievements.

If you have twenty minutes to spare, take some time to check out her TEDTalk.  It will leave you feeling super jazzed and ready to make an impact in this world, no matter who you are, what you do, or where you’re located.

Enjoy!

Young Conservationists at Waubesa Intermediate School

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

This morning I had the pleasure to discuss and share environmental topics with third graders at Waubesa Intermediate School. Not an easy task considering their love to share stories and the million other distractions going on in the room. Armed with an assortment of ideas, I took on trying to explain to the kids that their simple actions in the classroom and at home can have a huge impact on the environment.

My goal was to make the connection between their everyday actions and the effects those have on the environment, but more importantly, leave them with simple things they can do to reduce those impacts. It was energizing to see the excitement and concern they already have for the environment which is a result of great parents and wonderful teachers already working hard to instill those values.

Why are activities like this so important?
It’s wonderful that the teachers are creating an environment in school where the kids are held responsible for their actions. Working with kids at this young age is so important because they are developing their own mindsets and habits, and it is absolutely necessary in getting young kids excited and concerned about saving the environment. So this week we nominate the teachers and kids of Waubesa Intermediate School for the Weekly Heroes of Sustainability Award.

It was great to meet you all today and thanks for having me.
